I’m in a photography rut. I’m just not experimenting enough.
So for a year, starting today, I plan to go on one photography assignment or “mission” a day.
Shoot something at 300mm. Shoot a triptych. Shoot something red! These don’t have to be complicated.
People love these “one – [something] – a – day” photography groups on Flickr.
Whatever; right now I just want to go on missions that get me experimenting. I’m happy to have those assignments be in groups, or stand-alone.
So I need photography mission objectives. Does anyone have some, or know where I can find some?

I like the daily shoot ideas but I am sorry there’s no forum for gathering ideas. I also got some amazing ideas from friends and family as well (mostly on Facebook). I’m trying to figure out how to capture these and give people a chance to contribute (wiki? Google Docs spreadsheet?).

Great idea. Here are some mini projects for you:
January 5, 2010- shoot something with the intent to process it B&W (changes how you view the subject when you’re taking the picture)
- shoot with the intent to process it square format (like Hasselblad medium format proportions), again changes how you view the subject when composing the photo (also a little tricky to do when you’re looking through a standard viewfinder)
Have fun!

Huge thanks to everyone who has offered ideas for this project. I received many more suggestions through Facebook and in person, and I wanted to include some of them here:
- Star trails in winter sky
January 5, 2010- Something your mother would love
- Shoot with someone else and compare shots
- Most interesting thing at the same time every day (3:14)
- An hour at a busy intersection
- Evening photography without a tripod on something creative
- “Product shot” of something in the kitchen (marketer for a day)
- Shiny, reflective surfaces
- Repetitive patterns
- Shoot with film
- Before, during, and after snow
- Set of square photos

Photograph items in a lightbox (similar to the “marketing” idea above) — very easy to create one. Experiment with different colored lightbulbs, or textured materials, to give your objects a unique glow.
